Surrealism, Classical Art, Religious Art, Historical Art
Salvador Dali: Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dali i Domenech, 1st Marquis of Pubol (May 11, 1904 - January 23, 1989) Born in the small agricultural town of Figueres, Spain, he is possibly the most famous of the surrealist painters. In addition to surrealism, his earlier works were impressionistic and his later more classic art revolved around science, history and religion.
Dali had a vivid imagination and loved unusual and grandiose behavior. He attended the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid. During World War II he and his wife Gala left Europe and spent several years living in the United States. He had his first major retrospective exhibit in 1941 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The later part of his life was often spent in seclusion.

Geopoliticus Child, painted during WW II in 1943, represents the bloody emergence of the United States as a world super power. The man struggles to be free, propping himself up on the United Kingdom as he does so. The world is distorted, with South America and Africa shown larger than North America and Europe. The child's shadow is substantially longer than than the woman's.

The Persistence of Memory, painted in 1931, is among Dali's most well-known artworks. The original was only about 9.5" x 13". He came up with the idea for this painting while eating some soft Camembert cheese.
The Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory, painted a little over twenty years after the original, shows a fresh 'quantum view' of the art as a result of the new physics and Dali's vivid imagination.
